Blood Tests Reveal Organ Age

Your organs age differently due to genetics and environmental factors. Simple blood tests for proteins can identify the functional age of 11 different organs in an individual.

In a study by Oh et al., published in Nature (2023), titled “Organ aging signatures in the plasma proteome track health and disease,” researchers analyzed plasma proteome data to assess organ-specific aging.

Key Findings

  • About 20% of the 5,600 people studied showed accelerated aging in at least one organ, linked to a higher prevalence of disease.
  • Researchers identified about 850 proteins that originated mainly from one organ.
  • A machine learning method was used to predict a person’s age by linking this data with the individual’s actual age.
  • Approximately 2% of participants had accelerated heart aging.
  • Elevated levels of certain proteins predicted a 250% increased risk of heart failure over a 15-year follow-up.
  • The study did not conclude whether the increases in proteins are a causative agent or a product of disease for any organ.

An example from the study showed that for people with no active disease or clinically abnormal biomarkers at baseline, every additional 4.1 years of heart age conferred an almost 2.5-fold increased risk of heart failure over a 15-year follow-up.

Gene Tests Predicting Organ Health

A 150-gene set expressed in muscle tissue has been independently proposed as a predictor of Alzheimer’s disease incidence and life expectancy.

Current Methods for Diagnosing Organ Health

Organ-specific methods currently used (excluding specific markers for cancer, autoimmunity, or infectious agents) include:

  • ALT (Alanine transaminase) for liver dysfunction.
  • Nutritional Deficiencies: Assessing levels of vitamins B6, B12, iron.
  • Inflammation Markers: Identifying infection, autoimmune responses, or exposure to substances like asbestos.
  • Clotting Problems: Evaluating blood coagulation function.
  • Cardiovascular Risk Factors: Blood pressure, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol (associated with heart attack and stroke), glycated hemoglobin (A1C) for diabetes risk.
  • Brain Aging: Measured by MRI-based volume assessments and functional connectivity methods, or requiring tissue samples.

  • Claim: Found in red wine; thought to extend lifespan.
  • Reality: Effective doses for humans are impractically high—you’d need to consume an unrealistic amount of wine.

Metformin
